Aliasing and Phonebooks

I have been somewhat afraid to switch my IM contact list from being people’s actual screen names to a list of aliases with people’s names. I don’t know anyone’s phone numbers because I just pick their name from my phonebook.

Would I be losing anything if I switched my screen names to real names for IM too? Is a handle a piece of individual identity that a phone number isn’t?
