In firefox, go to about:config

type in “background” as the filter make sure that “browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground” is set to true

this works really well in google reader, when you use keyboard shortcuts. j, k move up and down, and v opens the current item in a new tab in the background. really really nice.
